The Cabin in the Wood

The Cabin in the Wood

She stepped into the forest
Followed the  footprints
Along the wooded path
To the cabin in the wood
Wanting one more day
One more night with him
For it to be
Just the two of them
Alone together
In this sanctuary
They had built for themselves
Apart from the everyday
A place of serenity
Of peaceful solitude
Where the mornings were brisk
Perfect for sipping coffee
While watching the early light
Reflect off the water
For afternoons spent walking
Or reading
Or just talking
And singing along with
Music played on the radio
For simple suppers
That left them full
Followed by a night beneath the stars
A warm fire toasting toes
Cheeks aglow in warmth
For nights spent naked
Under quilts
And each other
She wanted to find him here
Just one more time
But when she arrived
She found herself alone
She opened the door
Went inside
And waited
