Swells

My heart swells

Like an ocean tide

And I am lulled 

By gentle waves

That cradle and caress

As I drift

Further from shore

But I have floated 

Too far away

And now I am pulled 

Down by the undertow

A drowning heart

Does not float

It sinks in panic

In the suppression of breath

There is no calling out

So in silence I stay

Head beneath the waves

Caught in the ebb and flow

Rescue my heart

Else I drown

In these swells
