Pianist

Pianist

She flexes her fingers
Feeling their excited anticipation
As she sits down at the upright grand
She is an old girl but still beautiful
Her finish has cracked with age
Strings often slipping out of tune
Ivory keys are chipped teeth
That still elicit a grin
Whenever she visits
She plays the music by rote
Closes her eyes
And opens her ears to the familiar sound
And let’s her fingers remember
What her heart could never forget
