Red

Red

She stood straight and still.  The winter’s wind pulling on her long red hair, shifting her dress around her legs, trying to push her down.  But she stayed true.  She faced death head on, unafraid of his darkness, his shroud or his scythe; took no notice of the unkindness of ravens he sent forth to collect souls.  He stood menacingly, holding his black book open.  But she knew the book of the dead intimately.  Read cover to cover.  Death had been wrong and she knew it.  She would find the one Raven that possessed her soul… and set him free.

    1. The write was inspired by the image. I loved how this girl seemed to be standing up to death. And because he’s holding a book out to her it almost felt like a trial. These are the rules that death has to follow and he’s trying to prove his case. Ravens of course carry souls back and forth between the realms. In my mind’s eye, I imagined that one particular raven had fallen in love with the girl. And she had fallen in love with him. So that they now possessed each other’s souls, rather than their own, so neither could belong to death because neither possessed their own soul. A sort of loop hole in the rules... can a soul be taken if it has already been given away freely? The Raven protects her from death and she fights for his freedom. If the story were to play out I imagine that the love between the girl and the raven is able to defeat death. And they will belong to each other for eternity. These 100 words show just a snippet of that story.

    3. Lol! I was laughing that the explanation was longer than the write. But everyone brings their own meaning to the words. It was just how I imagined the story unfolding.
