Belated
I missed his birthday
For the first time
In as many years
As I have known him
For the first time
I didn't send him a greeting
With well wishes
And a message that said
I still thought of him
And missed him
For the first time
I let the day pass
Unacknowledged
And I wonder if he noticed
My absence
The way I always do
Every year
On mine
This is heartbreaking. And so very relatable. The anguish is bright and oppressing in every line...
ReplyDeleteThat is a great description, both bright and oppressing. Thank you.
DeleteI love that you are publishing again!!!! Your poem reminds me of me too .... a love affair decades ago, it ended as he was way too young and ready to begin a real life. We sent each other birthday greetings for some time, until I ended it .. it was time.
ReplyDeleteWhen the time comes, you definitely feel it. But there will always be the memories.
DeleteYour absence is noticed…
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Lori
