False Suns

False Suns

On the breast
Of an island
Five stand
Chanting stars
Round the fire
One
Takes a light
Searching
For sound
Seen
By a blind owl
There shall be
No false suns
This night
The moon kingdom
Rises
For the one
That is left

  1. A remarkable ekphrastic poem in this land of moonlight!

  2. The thought of false sun seems so real to me, reminds me a bit of how humanity have been denying night for such a long time.

    1. Agreed! We expel darkness with false light because darkness is something which is feared when really it should be embraced.

  3. Kerry is right, this is remarkable! (I had to study the art more than several times, for some reason I saw the owl as a kitty, thankfully I recognized the moon)

  4. I have witnessed false suns (sun dogs) in Sedona AZ just as the sun was rising and a few days later as it set. Magical - as is your poem.

    1. Thank you so much. I've just recently heard of sun dogs, and moon dogs as well. Would be spectacular to see.

  5. This is an excellent ekphrastic poem, Lori! Islands must have breasts, female ones to give comfort to the chanting stars. The final lines are chilling, and I’m left wanting to know what happened to the others – why is only one left?

    1. Thank you. That island was the first thing I keyed in on. I had to take a bit of time to really see everything that was happening in the picture. I loved the balloon sun that seems to want to take over the night's kingdom. (There is a figure on the left... standing tall next to the tree, at least it looks like one to me, cloaked with a skull's head... )
