Old Acquaintance

Old Acquaintance

In a time long before
They had known one another
Inside and out
He remembered her ripe smell
Captured the taste of her in the air
She recognized the feral look in his eyes
Even after all of these years
They were still as familiar
As the day they first met
She had left her hooded cloak at home
Long outgrown and forgotten
He abandoned the forest
There was little use hiding anymore
The hunt had left him hungry
And unsatisfied
While she was content
Just to be read

  1. Oh, we were both thinking of Little Red Riding Hood. Love your take on it, Lori.

    1. Thank you. I like the idea that the story has been set aside. Those old familiar roles have settled into something new.

    1. Thank you. I had originally written "intimately" instead of "inside and out" but I changed it to the latter to better tie in to the fairy tale. I'm really pleased that the feeling still came across.

  6. Oh how funny. I just left a comment on Hank's suggesting the old woman was Little Red all grown up.........then read this poem about that very thing. I especially love "while she was content just to be read."
