Azrael

Azrael

She held out

The last two feathers

All that remained of her wings

Angel

They called her

Always giving of herself

Without expectation of return

Offering her support

To anyone that needed it

What did she require of feathers

Now she had the ground

Beneath her feet

  1. The angel of death... brilliant. Women give so much of themselves. This beautiful poem brings that to light stunningly. So glad the image brought you to join us this week Lori!

  2. Emoteful. She gave of herself until there was nothing left to give. Makes me want to weep..

  3. As a kid I thought those winged bones on our back were from being an angel or becoming one. Here is my poem for the day http://www.looseleafnotes.com/2021/03/to-write-a-poem/

  6. This angel gave so much of her earned wings to others, to only find her self grounded
to the earth. Feathers often grow back, let us hope hers will once again sprout.

  7. “What did she require of feathers” ... Gorgeous transition.

  9. Grounded yet she has blessed so many. Beautiful and devastating at the same time.

  10. Lori, I am glad you wrote this. I am representative of the sow's ear type, I did not know of Azrael so I read up on him. No, he should not need any feathers.
I need now to learn how to prounce his name. I suppose he (what I read it is "he" although he appears as no-sex or either).
    Good Job!!

    1. Thank you. I nearly changed it to Azraelle to make it more feminine but preferred the actual name. I tried to show a shift from the divine to human so definitely doesn't need feathers and like death is a transformation from one state to another. I'm gonna have to do some more reading up on angels; their back stories are very interesting.

  11. Her sacrifice and the acceptance is absolutely awe inspiring. Love the close. "What did she require of feathers / Now she had the ground / Beneath her feet" My favorite lines.
