Self Same
I don’t take photos of myself
I never like them
Because I don’t recognize
The person looking back at me
My mirror image sees me
Smiles back
As she mimics me
We are the same
She and I
But photographs
Are static
Unmoving
Trapped in time
I see the girl in the photo
And I have a hard time
Remembering who she is
Because to me
She is very obviously
Someone else

I, too, have always found it a tad difficult to reconcile my self with the image in the mirror. The closest I've come is when I think of the moment the photo was taken, and think, Yes, that was me then.
ReplyDeleteMe then, me now, sometimes I don't recognize me at all. And sometimes I wish I could be who I was back then, and others I never want to be again. It's like we're made up of all of these different selves, but we're all the same person.
